St John’s the Evangelist Church in Alvanley is an Anglican church built in 1860. It sits within a semi rural location high up on the hills of the Cheshire Gap above Helsby.
Tradition apparently suggests that the bride and groom were held back within the grounds, blocked by a rope in front of the church gate. They would only be allowed to leave once they had agreed to purchase the drinks at the White Lion pub, which sits opposite.
An example of a wedding ceremony at St John’s and then a reception at the White Lion can be found here.
